Oily fish ‘could cut asthma risk’?

A research project carried out at Cambridge University has found that eating oily fish, such as mackerel or salmon, on a regular basis could protect against asthma.

The project involved over 750 people, some with asthma and some without. The participants were asked about their diets, especially the amount of oily fish they ate every week.

It was seen that those people with asthma who suffered from symptoms (such as wheeze, breathlessness or waking up with a tight chest) ate far less oily fish than those recognised asthmatics that were not troubled by their symptoms.

The research suggests that the change in the British diet – excluding oily fish- could be contributing to an apparent increase in asthma rates. It will be presented at the Winter Meeting of the British Thoracic Society…
