Liver Fat Content Increased in HAART-Associated Lipodystrophy, Insulin Resistance

Among HIV patients with lipodystrophy associated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), increased fat accumulation in the liver may be at least partially responsible for the insulin resistance commonly seen in these patients, investigators in Finland report.


As reported in the November 8th issue of AIDS, Dr. Jussi Sutinen and colleagues used magnetic resonance proton spectroscopy to measure hepatic liver fat content in 25 HIV-positive men with HAART-associated lipodystrophy (HAART+LD+), 9 HIV-infected men on HAART but in whom lipodystrophy was absent (HAART+LD-), and 35 HIV-negative healthy men (HIV-). Intra-abdominal and subcutaneous fat stores were determined by MRI.
