Metabolic Syndrome Tied to Increased Heart Disease Mortality in Men

Men with metabolic syndrome are more than twice as likely to die of coronary heart disease than their peers without the condition, according to a report published in the December 4th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Metabolic syndrome is a known risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease, lead author Dr. Hanna-Maaria Lakka, from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and colleagues note. Still, the impact of metabolic syndrome on cardiovascular and overall mortality is unclear.

To address this, Dr. Lakka’s team assessed the outcomes of 1209 middle-aged Finnish men who were classified as having or not having metabolic syndrome at baseline according to definitions from the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
