A strong association between daily use of cannabis and depression and anxiety in young women persists after adjustment for inter-current use of other substances, Australian researchers report.
Because of a continuing rise in cannabis use, “measures to reduce frequent and heavy recreational use seem warranted,” declares Dr George Patton and colleagues at the Centre for Adolescent Health, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Victoria, Australia. Their findings are based on a sample of 1,601 students aged 14 to 15 from 44 schools in the state of Victoria who were followed for seven years.
Researchers point out that some recreational use of cannabis is now the norm among a majority of young people in Australia, Britain, New Zealand and the United States, yet uncertainty persists about its physical and psychological consequences. A prominent concern is a putative link with mental disorders as a large intake of cannabis seems able to trigger acute psychotic episodes and may worsen outcomes in established psychosis.
