Mammography in Women Over 75 Identifies Smaller, Earlier Stage Tumors

Regular mammography screening in women 75 years of age or older detects tumors that are smaller and at an earlier stage than those found in women who do not undergo regular mammography, researchers report in the November 19th issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

 To study the controversial issue of mammography screening in older women, Dr. Jean L. Freeman and colleagues from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, collected data on 12,038 women, at least 69 years of age who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1995 and 1996.
