Improved Surgical Foot Surgery Technique Could Avoid Patient Dissatisfaction

Improved selection of surgical techniques could possibly avoid dissatisfaction among a minority of patients following foot surgery.

 Such a change would involve surgical techniques that avoid joint destruction, excessive shortening of single metatarsals, and digital amputation, say clinicians at the Department of Podiatric Surgery, Ilkeston Hospital, Iikeston, England.

 They studied 244 patients referred to the unit following foot surgery because of continuing pain, disability, footwear-fitting problems, and cosmetic concerns. A majority of the patients underwent first ray surgery to correct hallux valgus.

 The most common reason for referral was transfer metatarsalgia, followed by recurrence of hallux valgus and lesser digit deformity.
