Survival Following CABG in Australia Has Worsened Over Time

Australian patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in the early 1980s had better survival outcomes than their peers who underwent surgery between 1985 and 1993, according to a recent report. This finding appears to stem from the increased inclusion of higher risk patients over time.

Dr. P. J. Bradshaw, from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Nedlands, Western Australia, and colleagues analyzed outcome data from 8910 patients who underwent isolated first CABG in Western Australia between 1980 and 1993. The findings are published in the November issue of Heart.
