Patients with ongoing depression despite apparently adequate treatment with standard drugs may benefit from treatment with ethyl-eicosapentaenoate, 1 gram per day. That’s according to study results published in the October Archives of General Psychiatry.
“We did this study because we and groups of investigators in the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Belgium have all found that red blood cells and/or plasma in depressed patients often have abnormally low levels of eicosapentaenoate,” Dr. David F. Horrobin told Reuters Health. “Since eicosapentaenoate is an important molecule, which helps to determine how nerve cells behave, this deficit could play an important role in depression,” he added.
