The current guidelines of prescribing acetaminophen may need to be modified, according to the authors of a retrospective cohort study published in the November issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.
“Given the same risk susceptibility, users of acetaminophen at dosages below 2,600 milligrams per day experienced significantly fewer gastrointestinal (GI) events compared with those taking higher doses,” lead author Elham Rahme, PhD, from McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, says in a news release. “The rates of GI events increased with acetaminophen dosage, becoming equivalent to that observed with NSAIDs when the prescribed daily acetaminophen dosage exceeded 2,600 milligrams, the equivalent of eight regular-strength tablets per day.”
