NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Oct 18 –
Left ventricular wall thickness rarely exceeds 12 mm in trained adolescent athletes, according to a report in the October 16th issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. “Systematic sports training may cause increased left ventricular wall thickness (LVWT), creating uncertainty regarding the differential diagnosis of athlete’s heart from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM),” Dr. Sanjay Sharma, of University Hospital Lewisham, London, UK, and colleagues note.
“This distinction is crucial because HCM is responsible for about one third of all sudden deaths in young athletes.”
