Women who take antibiotics during pregnancy may increase their child’s risk of allergic diseases such as asthma, hay fever, or eczema, new study findings suggest. Lead author Tricia McKeever and colleagues, from the University of Nottingham in the UK, report their findings in the September 15th issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Because much of the immune system develops in utero, some experts speculate that “factors that modify microbial exposure at this time may have a long-term impact on the risk of developing allergic disease,” McKeever and her team note. Still, research in this area has been limited.
