NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Oct 04 –
Adipose tissue may be a determinant of transforming growth factor-beta-1 (TGF-beta-1) levels in hypertensive patients, perhaps mediated by leptin, according to a paper published in the September issue of the American Journal of Hypertension.
“TGF-beta-1 has been demonstrated to be overexpressed in hypertension,” Dr. Ettore Porreca, of the University of Chieti, Italy, and colleagues note. “Leptin, an adipocyte product, has been shown to play a role in obesity-related hypertension and in vitro studies demonstrated a biologic interaction between leptin and TGF-beta-1.”
