Maternal immunization with a recombinant version of the group B streptococcus surface protein, Sip, provides neonatal mice with immunity against group B streptococcal (GBS) infections, Canadian researchers report in the September issue of Infection and Immunity.
Dr. Denis Martin of Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, Sainte-Foy, and colleagues note that there is evidence to suggest that “vaccination of pregnant women could become a very efficient prophylactic strategy to prevent GBS infection in neonates.”
