– Breastfeeding is not protective against asthma and atopy, and, instead, may increase the risk, according to the results of a population-based study reported in the September 21st issue of The Lancet.
Dr. Malcolm R. Sears from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and colleagues collected data on 1,037 New Zealand children born between April 1972 and March 1973. The researchers assessed the children every 2 to 5 years until age 26 using respiratory questionnaires, pulmonary function tests, bronchial challenge and allergy skin tests. Using separate records of breastfeeding,
Dr. Sears’ team noted that, of the 1,037 children, 504 were breastfed and 533 were not.
