Middle-aged men are less likely to experience cardiovascular complications if they drink two to four glasses of wine daily after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), a French research team reports in the September 17th rapid access issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.
Dr. Michel de Lorgeril, of the Universit Joseph Fourier de Grenoble, and colleagues evaluated data for 353 men who participated in the Lyon Diet Heart Study, all of whom had been admitted to a coronary care unit and undergone invasive investigations.
The subjects were assigned to either a Mediterranean type of diet or a “prudent Western-type diet.” During a mean follow-up of 4 years, 104 cardiovascular disease complications occurred. These included 42 “hard endpoints” of death, AMI, cerebral stroke, pulmonary embolism and unstable angina.
