GnRH Agonist May Prevent Young Women From Reaching Peak BMD

Because GnRH agonist therapy is associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD), young women treated with GnRH agonists for endometriosis may never achieve peak BMD, increasing their risk for osteoporosis later in life, Dr. Sanjay K. Agarwal reports.

Dr. Agarwal studied the results of a previously published randomized clinical trial that compared the safety and efficacy of two GnRH agonists for the treatment of endometriosis. A 6-month course of GnRH agonist therapy can result in a 6% to 15% loss in vertebral BMD, he notes.
