Hyperplastic Polyps In Ulcerative Colitis May Have Neoplastic Potential

Hyperplastic polyps associated with chronic ulcerative colitis (CUC) seem to be genotypically similar to the sporadic type.

 This finding adds to the expanding list of molecular alterations discovered in hyperplastic polyps. It further supports the controversial theory that these lesions may have neoplastic potential, say researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, The University of Pennsylvania-Presbyterian Medical Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the DNA Diagnostic Laboratory, Carolina Medical Center, Charlotte, North Carolina and the University of Bonn, Germany.

 The researchers noted that interest in the biological and molecular features and neoplastic potential of colonic hyperplastic polyps is growing because of a recent finding of K-ras mutations in many of these lesions.
