CD8+ T cells might mediate recurrent abortion

Anti-foetal cytotoxicity may be related to increased levels of CD8+ T cells in couples who have recurrent abortions.

Researchers from the Universities of Alfenas and São Paulo, in Brazil, enrolled nine couples that experienced at least two miscarriages without apparent cause.

They compared these patients’ immunological characteristics with those of nine control couples who had at least two children and did not have a history of foetal loss. The degree of class I or class II human leukocyte antigen (HLA) sharing did not differ between patients and control couples. No woman expressed serum antipaternal antibodies.

On the other hand, patients expressed higher absolute numbers of CD8+ T cells than did controls. They also showed a trend towards increased CD19+ cell count.
