Levels of exercise and weight appear to be positive predictors of bone mineral density (BMD) in young women with anorexia nervosa.
Dr. Catherine M. Gordon of Children’s Hospital, Boston, and colleagues note that “profound osteopenia is a frequent, often irreversible complication of anorexia nervosa.”
However, there is a debate over contributing factors. To investigate, the researchers studied 61 adolescents and young women (mean age 17.8 years) with the condition. The findings appeared in the July issue of the Journal of Pediatrics.
