Obesity Linked to Increased Colorectal Cancer Risk in Premenopausal Women

Among premenopausal women, but not postmenopausal women, obesity is associated with a significantly increased risk for colorectal cancer, according to findings from a population-based study.

“Obesity is as much of a risk factor for colon (and perhaps rectal) cancer among premenopausal women as it is in men,” lead researcher, Dr. Paul D. Perry from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York, told Reuters Health.

“The results of most previous studies among women showed very weak effects, much weaker than among men, because they included many women who were postmenopausal when weight and height were assessed,” he added. In the August issue of Gut, Dr. Perry and colleagues report the results of their analysis of data on 89,835 women, 40 to 59 years of age, who participated in the Canadian National Breast Screening Study.
