Pregnancy Success For Women on Hemodialysis Has Improved

– Although still risky, pregnancy in women undergoing long-term dialysis is now successful in about 60% of cases, Taiwanese researchers report. Dr. An-Shine Chao from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Tao-Yuan, and colleagues studied 15 women who were undergoing hemodialysis from 1990 to 2000.

Among these women there were 18 pregnancies. Fourteen of the women had been undergoing hemodialysis for a mean of 5.3 years and one woman began hemodialysis at 16 weeks of gestation. During pregnancy the women’s hemodialysis was increased to 4 hours four to six times a week. As reported in the July issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 5 of the 18 pregnancies were terminated by elective abortion.

The remaining pregnancies were treated and there were 12 live births and nine surviving infants.
