Symptomatic Thromboembolic Events Uncommon After Major Orthopedic Surgery

While about 20% of patients who undergo hip or knee replacement will develop asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis, only 3.2% of patients experience nonfatal symptomatic venous thromboembolism and 0.10% experience a fatal pulmonary embolism, according to a recent report.

Dr. James D. Douketis, from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, Canada, and colleagues analyzed data from four clinical outcome studies and 13 venographic outcome studies to determine the risk of symptomatic venous thromboembolism in patients who underwent hip or knee replacement and received 7 to 10 days of standard anticoagulation therapy.

The studies were identified from a literature search of prospective trials published between 1993 and 2001, the authors note in the July 8th issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. A total of 6089 patients were included in the clinical outcome studies and 7080 patients were included in the venographic outcome studies.
