Sulfonylureas May Raise Coronary Vasospasm Risk by Closing Potassium Channels

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 12 –

 Mice with a genetic mutation that duplicates the action of sulfonylurea agents develop episodic coronary artery vasospasm and hypertension, scientists report in the July 15th issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation.

 “Studies in human diabetic patients taking sulfonylurea drugs, as opposed to insulin, have suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular side effects such as heart attacks,” Dr. Elizabeth M. McNally of the University of Chicago told Reuters Health. “The study we performed provides a scientific mechanism to explain that increased risk.”
