Intracoronary Radiation Therapy Effective in Diabetics With In-Stent Restenosis

Intracoronary radiation therapy significantly reduces recurrence of in-stent restenosis (ISR) in diabetic patients, according to a report published in the June 19th issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

ISR is a major problem for diabetics who undergo percutaneous coronary interventions. While intracoronary radiation therapy has been shown to reduce ISR rates in a broad range of patients, the effectiveness of the therapy in diabetic patients was unclear.

 To address this, Dr. Ron Waksman and colleagues from the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, assessed the outcomes of 749 consecutive patients with ISR who were randomized to treatment with intracoronary radiation therapy or placebo following conventional coronary interventions. The study group included 303 patients with diabetes.
