Strontium Ranelate Improves Bone Density in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 25 –

 In postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, 2 years of treatment with strontium ranelate improves lumbar bone mineral density and reduces the incidence of new vertebral fractures compared with placebo, according to results of the phase II Strontium Ranelate for Treatment of Osteoporosis (STRATOS) trial.

 Study coordinator Dr. Pierre J. Meunier, of H pital Edouard Herriot in Lyon, France, and an international team note in their report in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism for May that, unlike most agents used to treat osteoporosis, strontium ranelate (SR) both stimulates bone formation and inhibits bone resorption without altering the mechanical properties of bone.
