The risk of pneumonectomy for lung cancer is significantly related to the presence of coronary artery disease and to advanced pathological stages. Epidural analgesia helps to lower the risk of respiratory complications.
To assess the mortality rate and the incidence of cardiopulmonary complications after pneumonectomy for non-small cell lung carcinoma, as well as to identify possible associated risk factors, specialists at the University Hospital of Geneva, and the Chest Medical Centre, Valais, both in Switzerland, conducted an observational study of 193 consecutive patients who underwent pneumonectomy.
Potential risk factors taken from a local database, including all thoracic surgical cases, were analyzed.
