Fluvastatin Reduces Cardiac Events After PCI

June 26, 2002 —

Fluvastatin given shortly after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) significantly reduces cardiac events in people with average cholesterol levels, according to results of the Lescol Intervention Prevention Study (LIPS) published in the June 26 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

“The results of LIPS support the use of early lipid-lowering therapy with fluvastatin in post-PCI treatment, regardless of baseline lipid level,” write Patrick W. J. C. Serruys, MD, PhD, of the Academic Hospital in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and colleagues. In this randomized trial supported by Novartis Pharma AG, 1677 patients aged 18 to 80 years were recruited between April 1996 and October 1998.

All had stable or unstable angina or silent ischemia and had successful completion of their first PCI, which in 98% of patients was a balloon angioplasty with or without stent placement. Baseline cholesterol ranged from 135 to 270 mg/dL, with fasting triglycerides less than 400 mg/dL.
