Testosterone Replacement May Disturb Sleep in Older Men

SAN FRANCISCO — June 23, 2002 —

High-dose testosterone supplements appear to disrupt normal sleep and breathing patterns, according to a study in older men taking testosterone replacement therapy.

The findings were presented here June 21 at the 84th Annual Endocrinology Society Meeting (ENDO). Researchers at University of Sydney, led by Peter Liu, PhD, randomly divided 17 healthy men over 60 years of age whose morning serum testosterone levels were under 15 mmol/L into one of two groups.

They gave the first group three intramuscular injections of mixed testosterone esters in high doses of 500, 250, 250 mg at weekly intervals, and they gave the second group an oil-based placebo. After a cleansing period of eight weeks, the two groups switched over to the other treatment. Dr. Liu’s team assessed the subjects’ sleeping patterns before and after each treatment using a Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI) to determine the number of apnoeic events per hour of total sleep. In addition, they evaluated the men’s body composition and physical activity.
