Intestinal Microsporidiosis Curbed By Fumagillin

Fumagillin, a drug once used to treat malaria, has been found to be effective against chronic Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in immunocompromised patients.

Until now, there has been no known effective treatment for intestinal microsporidiosis due to E bieneusi, a cause of chronic diarrhea, malabsorption and wasting in these patients.

 This randomised double blind trial for the Agence Nationale de Recherches sur le SIDA 090 Study Group was done by Jean-Michel Molina with colleagues from the Hôpital Saint-Louis and University of Paris VII and Groupe Hospitalier Pitié-Salpétrière, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris.

 Participants were 12 immunocompromised patients with chronic diarrhea and E bieneusi infection. Ten patients had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and two had received organ transplants.
