Allopurinol improves endothelial function in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), according to a report published in the June 17 rapid access issue of Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association.
“These results are the first to show that treatment with allopurinol can improve vessel dilation in heart failure patients,” senior author Allan D. Struthers, MD, FRCP, from Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee, Scotland, says in a news release.
“The data are particularly noteworthy because allopurinol is often prescribed anyway in heart failure patients, although for other reasons. It is safe and relatively cheap.”
In this double-blind, crossover study, 11 patients with New York Heart Association class II-III CHF were randomized to treatment with 300 mg allopurinol or placebo daily for one month.
Compared with placebo, allopurinol significantly improved endothelial function as reflected in increased forearm blood flow response to acetylcholine (181 ± 19% vs. 120 ± 22%; P = .003).
