Glucose Tolerance Needs Check After Acute Myocardial Infarction

Fasting glucose or high glucose concentrations immediately after an acute myocardial infarction could be a marker of patients at high risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Lars Rydén and colleagues at the Department of Cardiology, Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, said their study confirms that people admitted to hospital with an acute myocardial infarction are at an increased risk of having undiagnosed diabetes or increased glucose intolerance.

Clinicians note that mortality is higher among diabetics who have myocardial infarction. Several large cohort studies indicate that people with pre-diabetic conditions, such as impaired glucose tolerance, have a raised risk of cardiovascular disease. A systematic overview suggests that a blood glucose concentration even below the threshold for diabetes mellitus is associated with coronary artery disease.
