Hypertensive Therapy Improves Cardiac Function

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 17 –

Lowering blood pressure reduces left ventricular mass and improves ventricular contractility, researchers report in a rapid access release published in the July 9th issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

“This is the first time it has been shown that antihypertensive medication can improve systolic function,” coauthor Dr. Richard B. Devereux told Reuters Health. Dr. Devereux, from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, and colleagues studied 647 hypertensive patients who were part of the Losartan Intervention For Endpoint (LIFE) Echocardiographic Substudy.

At baseline, the researchers conducted echocardiographic exams, which were repeated annually for 3 years. After 3 years of antihypertensive therapy, the average blood pressure was reduced from 174/95 mm Hg to 147/82 mm Hg (p < 0.001). Left ventricular mass was also reduced from an average 234 g to 194 g (p < 0.001), the researchers report.
