Trauma In Earthquake Victims Associated With Hospital-Acquired Infections

A high incidence of Acinetobacter strains was responsible for hospital-acquired infection (HAI) in victims of the Marmara earthquake in northwest Turkey.

Trauma was the significant factor associated with HAI, say researchers who retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 630 casualties following the destruction of several Marmara region towns.

A total of 532 (84 percent) were admitted to hospital between 17 August and 25 September 1999. The 312 males and 220 females were between the ages of two and90 years.

Factors analysed included demographic data, time buried under the rubble, medical and surgical therapies performed, type of injury and data on infection.

Of the 220 patients hospitalised for over 48 hours, 41 (18.6 percent) had HAI episodes associated mostly with wound infections, 46.5 percent.

Of the 143 culture specimens collected, 48 yielded potential pathogens.
