Type 1 Diabetes Presenting At Younger Ages

06/07/2002

By Mark Pownall

Type 1 diabetes is being seen at earlier ages, particularly in the under fives, a prospective survey in Belgium has found.

But, the survey suggests that overall, there is no increase in the disease.

The survey, from the Diabetes Research Centre at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium, found that over a 12-year observation period, there was a significant increase in the incidence of type I diabetes in those under 15 while the incidence in those aged 15-40 fell. There was an annual increase of 1.8 percent on average for those under 15, with a 5 percent yearly rise for those under five.

The incidence of type I diabetes remained the same for those under 40 at 9.9 cases per 100,000 population per year. For the under 15s, the incidence was similar in both sexes, but there was a marked male excess for those 16 and over, when there was a 1.6 male to female ratio.
