Low Levels of Hospital Nurses Linked to Patient Deaths

A new government analysis of nurse staffing data reveals that the number of nurses and the hours spent with patients significantly affect in-hospital morbidity and mortality.

 The study was published in the May 30 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. “Low RN staffing at hospitals makes it more likely that some patients will suffer pneumonia, shock and cardiac arrest, and gastrointestinal bleeding, and that some patients may die as a result,” Jack Needleman, PhD, of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, and co-author of the study, says in a news release.
