Men Who Sustain a Colles’ Fracture at High Risk of Hip Fracture

LISBON, PORTUGAL — May 13, 2002 —

Compared to women, men who have had a Colles’ (distal radius wrist) fracture are at high risk of future hip fracture.

“Because of the aging of the population, in only 20 years from now there will be as many hip fractures in men as there are today in women,” said Steven Boonen, Professor of Medicine at the University of Leuven, Belgium, who presented the findings here yesterday at the International Osteoporosis Federation’s World Congress on Osteoporosis.

“This will be a major public health factor, so it’s very important to know what the risks of hip fracture in men really are.” The team, from Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada, therefore set out to compare the relative risk of sustaining a future hip fracture in men and women who had already sustained either a wrist or vertebral fracture.

They investigated a total of ten cohort studies that reported radiologically-confirmed, low trauma wrist or vertebral fractures as a risk for later hip fracture in white men and women aged over 50. After demonstrating that these studies satisfied homogeneity of association criteria, their results were subjected to meta-analysis and the relative risk (RR) of future hip fracture was established with respect to gender and previous fracture type.

In postmenopausal women, the RR for future hip fracture after wrist fracture was 1.53 (95 percent confidence interval [CI] 1.34-1.74, p<0.001). For previous vertebral fracture, women faced an RR of 2.22 (95 percent CI 1.95-2.52, (p<0.001). Women with such a fracture were confirmed to be at significantly greater risk (p=0.001) of having a future hip fracture than those who had sustained a wrist fracture.
