Unnecessary Prereferral Imaging Studies Common In Evaluation Of Suspected Bone And Soft Tissue Tumours

Excessive prereferral imaging studies are often requested by both primary care and general orthopaedic doctors and do not contribute to the evaluation of the lesion in suspected bone and soft tissue tumours.

Investigators from the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, conducted a prospective study of 100 consecutive patients who had been referred to an orthopaedic oncology practice for the evaluation of suspected bone or soft tissue tumours. Seventy-six of the patients had bone lesions and 24 patients had soft tissue lesions.

Fifty of the patients were found to have benign tumours. Seventeen had primary malignant tumours, 11 had metastatic tumours and 22 had nonneoplastic conditions.
