Pulmonary Hypertension Not Necessarily a Contraindication for Liver Transplant

Patients with moderate and even severe pulmonary hypertension (PHT) can survive liver transplant and will not die of PHT during long-term follow-up, despite the widely held belief that PHT is a contraindication for liver transplant.

This finding is presented by researchers at Birmingham University, Birmingham, England, who examined the outcome of 145 patients who underwent liver transplant between 1997 and 1999.

Pulmonary artery pressures (PAPs) had been measured before surgery. Pre-transplant workup included electrocardiography and echocardiography for the majority of patients. Based on pulmonary floatation catheter measurements made after the induction of anesthesia, PHT was defined as mild or moderate to severe if the mean PAP (MPAP) exceeded 25 and 35 mmHg, respectively.
