AACR: Excess Weight Gain During Pregnancy Increases Risk of Postmenopausal Breast Cancer

Special to DG News

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — April 9, 2002 — Weight-gain of 38 pounds or more during pregnancy is associated with a 40 percent increased relative risk of postmenopausal breast cancer, according to a study reported Tuesday at the 93rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

But excess weight gain in pregnancy did not increase the risk of developing premenopausal breast cancer. The Institute of Medicine recommends that women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy.

Dr. Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, from the Lombardi Cancer Center, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, said that in western countries about "30 percent of women gain more than 38 pounds during pregnancy." Half of pregnant women gain the recommended amount of weight, while 20 percent of pregnant women gain too little weight, which does not increase cancer risk but poses a health risk to the fetus.
