Hysterectomy Associated With Urge Incontinence

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 29 – The results of a population-based, cross-sectional study show that the risk of urinary incontinence, but not that of stress incontinence, is increased by hysterectomy, Dutch investigators report.
Because urge incontinence is associated with a greater impact on quality of life than is stress incontinence, Dr. C. H. van der Vaart, of the University Medical Centre Utrecht, and colleagues recommend that women be warned of this adverse effect during the informed consent process before hysterectomy.
