WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) -Baxter Healthcare Corporation has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market an automated home-based dialysis system for the treatment of young patients with advanced kidney disease, the Deerfield, Illinois-based subsidiary of Baxter International reported on Tuesday.

Baxter said it received FDA clearance to market its HomeChoice Pediatric automated peritoneal dialysis system, a portable device with built-in safety alarms and easy to use controls designed to allowing parents administer dialysis to their children while they slept.

Baxter said the HomeChoice Pediatric system would be available in early 2002.

The Baxter system was specifically designed to deliver a lower volume of fluid, and then transmit the treatment data to the physician's office through a modem. New software features were also incorporated to allow physicians to analyze the data and make necessary prescription adjustments remotely.

Although other systems have been approved for in-home use, the HomeChoice Pediatric system is the only one indicated for pediatric use.
